Floodplain Administration

1989 Flooding

Some areas of Mono County are subject to flood hazards.  To learn more about Special Flood Hazard Areas, and how the County manages development in these areas, see the links below.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was established to provide affordable flood insurance for property owners, guide new development away from flood hazard areas, and ensure that new structures are constructed to prevent flood damage.  Read more about the NFIP here (https://www.floodsmart.gov/)

Mono County participates in the NFIP. This participation enables property owners in Mono County to be eligible to obtain low-cost flood insurance, which is sometimes a requirement for federally backed mortgages. The County participates through implementation of the County's Floodplain Ordinance. (https://www.monocounty.ca.gov/generalplan/chapter-21-flood-plain-regulat...). The ordinance contains rules pertaining to development within special flood hazard areas.

There are different development requirements depending on the type of floodplain that development is occurring in. To Find out more about flood zones, and to get maps of floodplains, go here (https://www.floodsmart.gov/flood-map-zone/about)

For a review of floodplain and floodway development there is a fee of $864.00

If after reading through the links above you have questions specific to your project or situation, please contact the floodplain administrator below.
