Marriage Licenses

IMPORTANT NOTICE

You may obtain a marriage license from any county in California and get married anywhere in California.

Marriage Licenses

A marriage license must be purchased prior to a marriage ceremony occurring and my be obtained at the County Clerk Office by appointment only. A marriage license can be obtained from any California County and the marriage ceremony can be performed anywhere in California.

Marriage licenses are valid for 90 days from the date of issuance, after which the license expires, and a new license must be obtained. 

General Requirements

Parties must physically appear together in person at the County Clerk's Office to be issued a marriage license prior to the marriage ceremony.

  • Both parties must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid, government-issued photo identification is required.
    • Driver's license, passport, green card or US-government military identification are acceptable forms of identification.
    • photo copies will not be accepted.
  • If divorce or State Registered Domestic Partnership (SRDP) termination was final within the past 90 days, a copy of the final judgment must be provided.
  • the Name Equality Act of 2007 requires couples to state on the license the middle and last names they intend to use after the wedding.
  • You must be unmarried. You cannot be currently married to each other or other individuals.
  • If you were previously married or in a State Registered Domestic Partnership (SRDP), you must provide the exact date (month, day, and year) the previous marriage or SRDP ended and the manner in which it ended (death, dissolution, divorce, or nullity).
Minors

If you are under 18, you must present a certified copy of the court order granting you permission to obtain a marriage license. Emancipated minors are not exempt from this requirement. For more information contact the Superior Court.

Public License vs. Confidential Marriage License
  • Standard (Public) License
    • Fee: $66.00
    • At least one witness is required for the ceremony and must sign the license.
    • This is a public record and anyone may obtain a copy. Certified copies are restricted to authorized individuals.
  • Confidential License
    • Fee: $80.00
    • Parties must be living together as spouses.
    • No witness is required for the wedding ceremony or to sign the license.
    • Copies of the record are not available to the public. However, the Clerk-Recorder's Office may confirm the existence of a record.
    • Certified copies may only be issued to one of the parties to the marriage or upon court order.
