MONO COUNTY, Calif. (April 10, 2025) – The Mono County Board of Supervisors has unanimously passed a resolution to adopt "California’s Joint Strategy for Sustainable Outdoor Recreation & Wildfire Resilience" as a guiding document for the County's Office of Sustainable Outdoors and Recreation and the Office of Emergency Services. This decision, presented by Marcella Rose, Sustainable Recreation Manager, and Wendilyn Grasseschi, Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator, and Liz Grans, Economic Development Director, underscores Mono County’s commitment to protecting its natural landscapes, safeguarding its outdoor recreation-driven economy, and enhancing community resilience against the growing threat of wildfires.

Mono County's economic model is centered around outdoor recreation and tourism, relying heavily on the pristine beauty and health of its natural environment. However, the increasing risk of catastrophic wildfires in recent decades poses a significant threat to both the county's landscapes and its economic stability.

"This resolution is a critical step in protecting the very essence of Mono County," stated Board of Supervisor’s Chair Lynda Salcido (District 5). "Our economy and way of life are intricately linked to the health of our environment. By aligning our efforts with the state's strategic vision, we are prioritizing both the preservation of our natural beauty and the safety of our community."

Adopting this strategy positions Mono County to effectively engage with state and federal programs, potentially unlocking crucial funding to implement proactive wildfire mitigation measures. This strategic alignment will enable the County to leverage resources and expertise to protect its landscapes and infrastructure from catastrophic events before they occur.

"The adoption of this strategy demonstrates Mono County's proactive approach to addressing the challenges of wildfire and sustainable recreation," Salcido continued. "This collaborative effort, spearheaded by Sustainable Recreation Manager Marcella Rose, Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator Wendilyn Grasseschi, and Economic Development Director Liz Grans, will strengthen our community's resilience and ensure the continued enjoyment of our natural resources for generations to come."

The "California’s Joint Strategy for Sustainable Outdoor Recreation & Wildfire Resilience" provides a roadmap for integrated management practices, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across agencies and stakeholders. Mono County is committed to working closely with state and federal partners, as well as local organizations and residents, to implement the strategy's goals.
