May 25, 2023, Tioga Road/Tuolumne Meadows update

The Roads Crew is currently working near McSwain Summit which is approximately 15 miles from the Crane Flat Tioga Gate.

The Roads Crew has discovered road damage 2.7 miles from the Crane Flat gate.  This area will require one-lane controlled traffic if it cannot be repaired before it is opened to the public.

The Avalanche Team continues to work out in front of the Roads Crew.  The Team continually assesses each of the 24 known avalanche zones for as long as there is avalanche risk at each individual avalanche zone.  Rigorous safety protocols are in place to protect the Roads Crew.  Due to the unprecedented winter and evidence of avalanches occurring outside of known avalanche zones, the Team is assessing areas outside of the 24 known avalanche zones.  The Team is currently assessing Olmsted Point, which is the most hazardous avalanche zone and usually the last zone to be "cleared" of avalanche danger.

At Tuolumne Meadows, water and wastewater utility systems have not been assessed.  Damage is anticipated to the critical utility systems and other facilities, like the damage to the Tuolumne Meadows Ranger Station that has made it unusable.
