Subject: Notice: Pile burning planned at June Mountain Ski Area and Mammoth Knolls

Weather and air quality conditions permitting, fire crews will be pile burning at the June Mountain Ski Area and near Mammoth Knolls tomorrow.

At June Mountain, nine slash piles are part of the fuels reduction project that removed standing dead whitebark pine mountain throughout this summer. Fire crews are planning two to three days to complete these piles.

At Mammoth Knolls, up to 21 acres of piles are planned to be burned southwest of Mammoth Knolls and north of Forest Trail Rd, near the Earthquake Fault area. Piles are adjacent to Hwy 203, Mammoth Scenic Rd, Mammoth Mountain Village, Forest Trail, and Hillside Dr. These piles are also part of hazardous fuels reduction projects. Pile burning should take one day to complete.

Crews will monitor and patrol these areas after the pile burning is completed. Crews are taking advantage of snow in the forecast to most safely complete pile burning.

Smoke may be visible from June Lake, locations within the town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, and along Hwy 395 near both towns.
