Pile burning continues

Fire crews report that the pile burning at Mammoth and June Mountain has gone well. They continue to take advantage of the snow to complete pile burning.

Thursday, pile burning will occur in two locations near June Lake. The first is south of the village and east of Gull Lake. Crews plan to complete 20 acres of piles there. Crews also plan to complete 110 acres of piles south of the June Lake Junction and west of Hwy 395.

Fire crews are also planning to complete 10 acres of piles along the west side of the Rock Creek Road.

Mechanical thinning is used to reduce fuels, especially near developed areas and communities. This reduces the risk of an unwanted fire and provides firefighters safer response in the event of a fire.  The piles are burned when conditions permit, such as with the recent snow.

Visitors and residents will see smoke from Tom’s Place and Sunny Slopes, along Hwy 395, and in June Lake.
