County boundary adjustment

You may be aware that, since early 2018, the Mono County Board of Supervisors has formally worked to change the boundary between Mono and Madera counties so that Reds Meadow and the upper reaches of the Middle Fork San Joaquin River area of Madera County would become part of Mono County. The primary reason for doing so is to ensure improved public safety and emergency response services.

The efforts to change the county line looked promising, until recently. Madera County officials have indicated that, rather than pursue the county boundary change, Madera County would instead like to develop a new memorandum of understanding with Mono County  to address law enforcement and first responder issues. While that may be Madera County’s prerogative, Mono County understands that public agencies and private institutions in Mono County are providing a host public services in the Reds Meadow/Middle Fork San Joaquin River area of Madera County (in addition to emergency response) that really should be part of any MOU that might get developed.

The Mono Board of Supervisors will receive an update on the Mono-Madera County Boundary Adjustment Process and consider Madera County’s request to develop a new MOU during the Board meeting that will be continued to Wednesday, April 17th in Suite Z in Mammoth Lakes. The update is scheduled for 1 p.m. Your input on this matter will be helpful and appreciated. The Board is seeking a public discussion of “eastside” services that are provided in Madera County, and what issues need to be addressed in any new MOU.

The staff report and attachments for next week’s discussion are attached for your background information.

Thanks for your help. We look forward to hearing from you on Wednesday.
